Kayaking in New York City

Whenever I tell a friend that I’m going kayaking, I always get mixed reactions like:

“Where?!” “OMG! You finally took a vacation?!” “On the Hudson? How far Upstate are you?”

It fills me with delight when I get to tell them that I haven’t left the city.

New York, Manhattan in particular, is home to so many activities and experiences that many of us who live here take for granted.

Kayaking along one of the piers or at Governor’s Island is one of them.

Downtown Boathouse, a local non-profit, offers free public access to the harbor from May – October through its’ public kayaking programs. The Boathouse offers open kayaking, lessons or trips throughout the season.

All you have to do is show up at one of their four locations, sign a waiver (good for the whole season), grab a life vest and you’re all set.

I’m so happy I discovered that I could do this! It’s a great way for me to relax after a stressful work day. And it’s also great for group outings or a date with your significant other!
