3 Things to Do During a Long Weekend

3 Things to Do During a Long Weekend

Here we are ALREADY halfway through the first month of the New Year.

Martin Luther King Day is on Monday and I literally have had no time to prepare a decent getaway for my extra day of relaxation. If your work schedule is anything like mine I know that we are both in the same boat.

So to make sure that the long weekend isn’t a total bust, I’ve prepared a list of 3 things you can do during this lovely 3-day weekend:

1. Something Unconventional

Remember the resolution(s) that you created almost three weeks ago? Well it’s time to revisit that list because I’m sure you added something about the person you wanted to become. Now is the time to start working on that goal by doing something that is completely uncharacteristic of you.

If you’re a homebody you should try to get out for a morning run, walk around the local park or go to a museum or a play.

If you typically work on the weekend (like me) you should put the laptop down and try going to a Bikram yoga class or your local spa to relax.

2. Reevaluate Your Network

Your network determines your networth”

NO, this does not qualify as work.  This weekend is a great time to take stock of the people that you have in your network.

A rule of thumb for me is to “reach forward and to reach back,” essentially I try to reconnect with 3 people who are already in my network AND I try to meet/add 3 new people to my network each week. This helps you stay top-of-mind with people that you admire or value and it allows you to nurture the existing relationship. Another thing about this strategy is that it allows you to talk to people when you DON’T NEED THEM.  One very common networking mistake is to be seen as the person who only calls when they need a favor. DO NOT BE THIS PERSON.

You should organize your business cards (take the rubber band off the stack and dust them off) by purchasing b-card sheet protectors and putting them in a binder for easy retrieval. You will also see names and numbers that you probably didn’t even realize you had.

Update your Linkedin profile. Answer your messages. And look for new people to link up with. You should also request professional recommendations from former employers, colleagues or clients.  One thing I’m going to do is to really THINK about what information people are looking for when they visit my profile and determine the best way to distribute THAT information.

3. Create a Vision Board

A dream is only a dream until you write it down. On paper it becomes something tangible. Something you can look at every day and decide just what you need to do to achieve that goal.

Same rule applies with a vision board.

There is no “right” way to do a vision board. Think about all of the things you want to welcome into your life this year and display it on a board. When you visualize things and live life as if these things are already in your life….everything will fall into place.

This way of thinking is based on The Secret.
