After 73 years of exclusivity, Vanity Fair has decided to open up its international best-dressed list to street style enthusiasts and any other pedestrian who wants to enter.

“Starting [this week], you can kick-start a journey to join their ranks: for the first time ever, Vanity Fair will give readers the opportunity to submit photos of themselves and others to be considered for the 2013 list. The two winners of our International Best-Dressed List Challenge—one man and one woman—will be announced in the September issue of the magazine.” – Vanity Fair

The magazine’s editor-in-chief Graydon Carter said, “Fashion has become more liberated thanks in no small part to the Internet and social media. We’re excited about bringing the iconic International Best-Dressed List into the digital age.”

My guess is that this is an experiment cooked up by the magazine’s editorial and social media departments to increase traffic to- and interest in their website. It’ll be interesting to see how it all turns out and whether or not opening up the list will diminish its credibility or earn them any new fans.

I’m also curious to see who ends up winning this “contest.” Will it be the usual fashion blogger suspects or an actual unknown fly guy/girl?
